Groove Your Swing

CoverA cast isn’t about muscle, it’s about tempo and timing. To groove that tempo, try piling 30 to 40 feet of line out the tip of your rod, directly in front of you, at your feet. Next, cast the rod back and forth until you pick up all the line, first with short strokes, then with longer, paused strokes. The line won’t stay airborne unless your timing is right. If you are still tangling, that’s usually a tailing loop, caused by punching the rod too hard on the forward cast. When you learn how to lift that pile of line a few feet at a time, you’re actually grooving your swing. With enough practice, it becomes second nature. —K.D.
