Saving A Stroke

CoverWhen roll-casting or making a roll pickup, save an extra motion—and thus time and a potential foul-up— with this tactic. With a lot of line still on the water, lower the rod tip near the surface and rotate it backward. Surface tension on the line will cause those loose coils accumulated around your feet to slide out through the guides, adding several feet to the line already in play and eliminating at least one false cast. As a bonus, this motion places the rod and line in the perfect loading position to deliver the cast. Done properly, this technique can eliminate false casts entirely. —C.M.
