We have bad new to report, 1 of our 2 Salmon in the classroom aquariums broke this weekend. Of the 100 4″ salmon all but 4 were lost. However the other classroom is still on track to release almost as many in the Clinton River.

3/22/2010 Update: Hello. This is Veronica Hill and Caitlin Mccaghy. We are responsible for taking care of the salmon. The salmon are doing very well. We are cleaning the tank about 2-3 times a week. They are getting quite large and we are beginning to see even more sparkle to their scales. I can’t wait to see how many we have when we let them go.

3/18/2010 Update: Hello. My name is Veronica Hill and I am responsible for taking care of the salmon in the classroom. I have learned how to check the nitrate level, how to feed them, and I am learning to clean the tank. The fish are getting really big and on some of them, you can start to see some of the shine on their scales. I have also noticed that some of the fish are bigger than others but I think this may be the difference between the males and the females. I can’t wait to learn more about the salmon!

2/11/2010 Update: We are proud to say that we have about 100 healthly looking fish. It is amazing watching them grow, and the students have enjoyed caring for them. We had a few ups and downs, but once things settled in, they have done well. Pictures to follow soon.

Gail Miller’s 8th grade class at Scripps Middle School in Lake Orion, Mi.

2/12/2010 Update: Scripps, 8th grade Earth Science class of G. Miller. Reliable student, Bryan M. has been in charge of testing for ammonia. At his reccommendation, we change 25% of the water every two days. We have the water-system down to an art, 15 minutes. As they get bigger, we may change the water every day. The fish are currently 2″. We started with 200 eggs and we estimate about 60 healthy fish remaining. We are working on setting up a web-cam. We will call it the “sam-cam”. More details soon……
